Faith in the Impossible

·

"One can't believe impossible things."

"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the queen. "When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" (Lewis Carroll, "Alice in Wonderland").

What would happen if we challenged ourselves to start believing in the "impossible"? What if you replace the idea of impossibility with the idea of faith?

My favorite definition of faith comes directly from Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen". There are a couple of really strong verbs there. Assurance. Conviction. Ponder those! It doesn't say that faith is wishy-washy or that it is fleeting. Nor is it weak or an excuse.

If someone tells you they "have faith" in an outcome, celebrate that! Pray for that to continue for them! Friends, faith is an assurance. It is an assurance from the Holy Spirit in your heart that the promises from God’s Word you're hoping for (that are placed within you because God put them there) will happen. I am not talking about prosperity gospel here...I am talking about walking with the Lord so that your hopes are His hopes grounded in His Word, and not just your own ideas. If the things you hope for aren't in alignment with God's will for your life - they're most likely not going to happen!

Psalm 37 is one of my favorites. It tells us to "Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Do you notice what is in those verses? The idea of befriending faithfulness. In other words, be open hearted to what God wants for you. Explore what delighting yourself in the Lord means - NOT because he's going to magically give you everything you ever wanted, but because He promises to be enough for you. When you do those two things (befriend faithfulness and delight in the Lord), the desires that are in your heart become FOR HIM and FROM HIM.

Those are the "impossible things" I want you to think about beginning with spending “30 minutes a day” in prayer and His Word. The more time you spend with Him, the more you will find your desires become more of what He desires. Your faith will become assured. You will find yourself believing in “the impossible.”
