On Being a Woman

·

Hey there! I’m Erin Marcott, and I will be serving as the new Women’s Ministry resident!

I love the way God made women and the role he’s given us... or at least, I do now. It took me a while.

I was around the age of 10 when I first heard controversy about the differences between men and women and how that seemed to affect the way in which they were allowed to participate in church. I was confused about it, because it seemed like being a man would give me greater opportunities to minister.

I decided to figure out why God had set things up this way. Why and how did he make women different from men? Why give us differing strengths? And what could possibly be the purpose for our emotions and resilient hearts? I wanted to know what to do with all the passion that he’s given me.

So, I began to research. I’m a reader and have an embarrassing number of books on the topic of men and women. I’ve listened to wise voices, watched women in ministry, and pondered it all. For the last 15 years, I have explored who God has designed us to be and the result is that I have grown to love being a woman. I understand now that of course God wants women to be instrumental in the church, but that has a unique look.

The first woman that God created was named Eve, which is deeply significant. Eve means “life”, and while we do biologically bring life, there is also a much deeper reality. We possess a beauty within us that, despite our sin, shows the world a glimpse of God’s beauty. This is lovely, but it is not easy. It means we bring life to all the spheres we are in, through a smile, a kind word, laughter, joy. God has filled us with His life, and by sharing ourselves, we are bringing a bit of God’s life into the world! I am in this ministry with all of you to explore together what that looks like; how our hearts, our lives, and very beings can fill others with the life of God.

There are still times when I wish I could be “one of the guys” (they’re just so much fun!), but I can also see how I, as a woman, enrich the lives of the men around me. I love the strong confidence of men and the clarity God’s given them. They’re like the bright sun; with their godly intensity bringing safety and guidance to the world. But women paint the rest of the sky. We’re the brightly colored sunsets, the fascinating clouds, the rain that brings growth and rest, the bright blue canvas that makes you happy to be alive. May we celebrate the strengths of both genders, using the gifts of both to uplift the church and show the world how good God is!

We have so many beautiful topics to discuss together, but for now, bask with me in all the joy of being female... of revealing God’s beautiful life to this world!
