20 Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety

·

Sadly, travel anxiety is so crippling that it literally withholds people from experiencing God's creation. And, believe it or not, I get it. I often need to review the following Bible verses for travel anxiety for myself.

Even as a full-time traveler, I still get panicky when I'm in a new environment, when I'm a foreigner who sticks out like a sore thumb, when I don't speak the language or when my trip doesn't go according to plan.

A few years ago, I landed in France to study in an immersive language program in the northern city of Lille.

I couldn't speak any French. I didn't know a single person in my study abroad group. It was my first time living on my own -- completely on my own for that matter. We were staying in single apartments, and, of course, I was the only one from my group on my floor.

If that wasn't lonely enough, my international cellular data wasn't working, and I had no WiFi until the complex owner approved my usage 24 hours later.

I was totally alone with absolutely no form of communication -- plus a huge language barrier.

Unsurprisingly, I had a full-blown panic attack as soon as I got into my empty, European-size studio. I called my mom in tears as our cell plan charged by the minute. (Story to be continued...)

There's a reason why anxiety is discussed throughout the entire Bible: fear is universal. Everyone experiences anxiety.

Those who deny the experience are actually usually projecting their subconscious fear onto others through control, anger or neglect.

The difference between the fearful and the truly fearless is how they handle fear -- whether they allow fear to control them, or graciously accept fear as an internal protection device and fulfill their God-sent dreams regardless.

To help fulfill your God-sent travel dreams (yes, there is a divine reason you feel pulled to travel), here are 20 Bible verses for travel anxiety.

1. Matthew 17:20-21

"He replied, "...Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

2. Job 12:10

"In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind."

3. Psalm 91:11-12

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

4. 2 Timothy 1:7

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

5. Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

6. Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

7. Genesis 1:31

"God saw all that he had made, and it was very good..."

8. Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

9. Matthew 6:34

10. Psalm 94:19 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy."

11. John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

12. Proverbs 31:25 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"She is clothed with strength and dignity. She can laugh at the days to come."

13. Psalm 116:5-6

"The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me."

14. 1 John 4:4 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."

15. Psalm 146:6

"He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them -- he remains faithful forever."

16. Genesis 1:1-2 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."

17. Jeremiah 17:7-8

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

18. Psalm 146:9 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked."

19. Proverbs 3:21-26

"My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight. Preserve sound judgment and discretion. They will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared."

20. Luke 12:22-26 (Bible Verses For Travel Anxiety)

"Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.
Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?"

After crying over the phone with my mom, she said, with an empathetic profoundness in her voice, "You have to get up, fix your makeup and go out to dinner with your study abroad group even though you don't know them yet. Be brave."

So, I did.

Obviously, it wasn't easy reapplying mascara with eyes puffed from tears and 24+ hours of red-eye flights, but, thanks to God, I managed to muster enough courage to push my introverted self out the door.

Little did I know, that small action was pivotal for the entire course of my life. At dinner, I met an incredible group of girls who traveled around France, Belgium and Holland with me on the weekends. Because of these travels, I became more adaptable. I learned that I am capable of navigating foreign places, languages, experiences and cultures.

And, that month of travel (and courage) ultimately laid the foundation for my career and paved the seemingly rocky road that God had already been constructing.
