What Does It Mean to Be a Sending Church?
You may have heard the statement that Alliance Church is a Sending Church. Have you ever wondered what that means or why that’s important? The best answer is that sending workers to the ends of the earth to reach the lost is important to God. In fact, one of the last things Jesus told His disciples before ascending to heaven and being seated at the right hand of God was to go and make disciples of all nations. (Matthew 28:19 – 20)
Pastor Mark Byrom, Executive Pastor of Outreach and Care at Alliance Church, addresses the global role of the local church in the newly published book, Missiology for Missions Pastors. Pastor Mark states, “As we read through Acts of the Apostles and into the Epistles, an important truth becomes apparent: God chose that we, his followers, would be Christ’s hand and feet to take the gospel to the nations. Acts 1:8 tells us we are chosen not only to impact our own communities but also to reach the entire world as we go in the power of his Spirit.”
Global Connections at Alliance Church aims to help our church attendees understand their role in Jesus' Great Commission to reach the world. Some of us are called to go either short-term or long-term. Others are called to help us send well through prayer or financial support. And still others are called to welcome the immigrants and refugees who move into our community.
One way we are helping students become more aware is through the GLO Ministry: Global and Local Outreach. GLO strives to give Green House students an opportunity to serve in our local context and to learn about Alliance Church’s global engagement. Recent activities have included volunteering at Bearing Precious Seeds in Oshkosh, learning about the Muslim faith, and eating at an ethnic restaurant. This fall, students can also participate in GLO Mission Emphasis Week at Green House (for students in 7th–12th grade) on Wednesday, October 15th, featuring special speakers Sammy Brokopp in Appleton and Zach Osbrink in Hortonville, as well as break-out sessions with Q&A for those interested in learning more about missions and involvement in GLO.
This October, we have several Global Connection events designed to make our church members aware of what Alliance Missions is all about. Consider choosing to attend one or more of these events and extend your awareness of global missions!
